Give Southwestern Landscaping a Try
With These Tips and Suggestions

Southwestern landscaping is easily one of the most popular landscaping designs in the country today. It is simple yet beautiful to look at. The landscaping designs from the Southwest region have a unique feel which makes your landscape stand out from the rest. They represent the simple life of people who live in the warm, dry climate of the Southwestern region.

One of the most important reasons why Southwest landscape is extremely popular around the world is that it requires very little maintenance. Since you grow plants that require very little water, you do not have to water them every day. Also, these plants have very less pollen which keeps them away from allergies during summer.

If you want to add a hint of Southwest style to your backyard and garden, here are some tips and suggestions.

1. Southwest landscape is all about designing your land with plants that are found commonly in the Southwestern region. These plants, as you know, do not require a lot of water to grow. They are basically chaparral type plants which are best suited for desert type climates. Some of the plants that you can grow include cactus, ornamental grass, yucca, sage, and ocotillo.

2. Grass is a strict no-no when it comes to Southwestern landscaping. Grass requires a lot of water to grow and it is unlike any other plant life you can find in the desert region. If you have grass in your garden, it does not have that dry, warm look of the Southwestern region. So, instead of grass, use stones and rocks.

3. Use different types of plants to make your garden look unique. If, for example, you have rounded shrubs on one side, make sure you have some kind of tall, narrow plants on the other side. This contrast makes your landscape look even better.

4. Apart from native plants like cacti, you can also add flowering plants like crasulla capitella which look really beautiful and make your garden look aesthetically appealing.

5. Simple things like a rough wood entry or ranch style fencing can make your garden look like an actual ranch. You can add sculptures and other such things to make your ranch style landscape look real.

6. You can use adobe bricks to build pillars, fountains, and benches in your Southwest landscape. You can also coat these structures with stucco to give an authentic Southwestern look to your garden.

7. Making walkways with gravel is one of the sure shot ways to give your garden a cool, traditional Southwestern feel.

There you have it folks. Keep these tips about Southwestern landscaping in mind, decorate your garden appropriately, and make your backyard look rustic and appealing.
